1: Get Started with Online Application Assistance

Application assistance services can simplify the process for many DMV related services for a fee, including: renewing your license, applying for a license, registering a vehicle, replacing your license, changing your address and more. In addition to assistance in preparing official forms, the value added services and products you will receive include a comprehensive Easy Guide™ containing information relevant to your service needs; 30 days of both emergency Roadside Assistance and the Repair Assist consultation service from Road America. Other benefits include an ongoing monthly newsletter and a quarterly magazine covering important updates that affect drivers, important safety tips, trends, legislative updates and ways to save money on vehicle-related services.

2: By mail

Some drivers prefer to handle the renewal process by mail, rather than taking advantage of assistance services, visiting the DMV in person, or via available online services. Service by mail is available with limitations. Read below for additional details or visit your local DMV.

3: Via a DMV office

If your specific needs require an in-person visit, most, if not all, driver license services can be handled at your local DMV office. Varying DMV offices sometimes supply different types of services so you will need to check before your visit to make sure the DMV closest to you provides the service you require. In addition, you can call to see if your DMV allows you to make a personal appointment.

Proving Identity to Apply For A New Colorado Drivers License
The Colorado drivers license identification requirement chart, shown on the Colorado Department of Revenue's website, shows the documents that can be used to prove identity. One document from the list may satisfy all elements of proof, or the individual may have to show more than one document to fully satisfy the requirements. The documents must be one of the following:

  • Certified originals
  • Certified amended originals
  • True copies certified by issuing agency

If an individual is unable to bring these documents, they will not be allowed to apply for a new Colorado drivers license.

Additional Colorado Drivers License Requirements and Information
The Colorado DMV offices no longer have instant photo equipment. A drivers license complete with all identifying information and your photo will be mailed to the address that is on file with the DMV. The driver will be issued a temporary paper permit until the new card arrives in the mail. These paper permits carry the same responsibilities and restrictions as the plastic card. It is essential that each individual applying for a new Colorado driver's license provides the DMV with an accurate address. If the driver has not received the card within 30 days of applying, immediately contact the DMV office where you applied.

First-Time Colorado Drivers License Holders
If this is the first time the individual has applied for a Colorado drivers license, he or she must show:

  • 50 logged hours of driving time with a parent, guardian, instructor or other approved person
  • Have held a driver's awareness or minor instruction permit for at least 12 months prior to applying for a full Colorado drivers license

Fees/Cost

The cost to receive a new Colorado drivers license is $21. The individual county office may also charge an additional convenience fee for processing the application. There is a list of Colorado drivers license offices and their hours of operation on the Colorado DMV website.
