Some drivers prefer to handle the renewal process by mail, rather than taking advantage of assistance services, visiting the DMV in person, or via available online services. Service by mail is available with limitations. Read below for additional details or visit your local DMV.

3: Via a DMV office

If your specific needs require an in-person visit, most, if not all, driver license services can be handled at your local DMV office. Varying DMV offices sometimes supply different types of services so you will need to check before your visit to make sure the DMV closest to you provides the service you require. In addition, you can call to see if your DMV allows you to make a personal appointment.

 

Colorado Drivers License Renewal In Person
A Colorado drivers license renewal can be submitted at any Colorado DMV office. A driver 22 years or older can renew any time before the expiration date. Drivers turning 21 must wait until after their birthday to renew their Colorado license.

Required Documents
To complete a renewal in person, the driver must bring the following documents to the Colorado DMV drivers license office:

  • Current license or proof of identity
  • Documentation of name change, if applicable
  • Renewal fee of $21 (valid for five years)

As of April 4, 2011, any person wanting a Colorado DMV drivers license must provide proof of residence. Any of these documents will work:

  • Utility bill
  • Credit card statement
  • Pay stub
  • Rent receipt
  • Telephone bill

Colorado Drivers License Renewal By Mail
To process a driver's license renewal form by mail, the applicant must fill out an eligibility form.

Note: Applicant cannot renew by mail if he or she is under 21, over 61, is renewing a commercial drivers license, or wants to replace his or her photo.

Online Colorado Drivers License Renewal

It is now possible to complete a Colorado drivers license renewal online. If you qualify to renew your license online, you will also need a current credit card and valid email address.

Besides the standard renewal fee, the driver may also have to pay an administrative processing fee to process a drivers license renewal online.  

 Additional Information Regarding Colorado Drivers License Renewal

For military personnel, the state will provide a three-year automatic extension of their Colorado drivers license renewal. Drivers seeking an extension will need to either pesent their military orders or ID with their license at any Colorado DMV office or ID with their license at any Colorado DMV office.

If a license has expired for less than one year, the driver will not be required to take the written and driver's tests to renew a license.  If the license has been expired for more than one year, the driver must take both tests and provide current proof of identity to renew a Colorado driver's license.
