Colorado Learner's Permit

For young drivers, a learners permit is a necessary step before going on to getting a drivers license in Colorado. Start the process by taking a practice test below!


You must be under 18 to apply for a Colorado learners permit. In order to qualify, a young driver's school records cannot show any suspensions, conduct problems or withdrawals from school.  Frequent incidences of school absenteeism will also prevent a young applicant from obtaining a Colorado learners permit.

A Colorado learners permit is valid for 24 months. Learners permit holders may only drive a vehicle if they are accompanied by a licensed driver who's at least 21 sitting in the front passenger seat.

Colorado Learners Permit Requirements
Drivers applying for a Colorado learners permit must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be at least 15 years old and be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian
  • If the applicant already has a permit from another state, it must be surrendered to the Colorado DMV
  • Acceptable proof of identification must be presented 
  • The parent or legal guardian must also present acceptable proof of identification

In order to secure a Colorado learners permit from the DMV, motorists that are U.S. citizens must bring the following:

Those not currently attending school must present the DMV with a high school diploma, GED or proof that they have enrolled into a college.  All driving forms must be signed by a school representative.


Colorado learners permit tests are performed on a walk-in basis at a Colorado Customer Service Center.  After studying the Colorado Drivers manual, applicants will be given separate tests for the Colorado road rules and signs.  New drivers are also required to also take a vision test. 

Colorado Learners Permit Fees
A Colorado learners permit costs $10, payable by cash, check, money order, credit or debit cards. This fee must be paid at the time of taking the written test. There are no refunds if a motorist fails the test. An additional $10 fee must be paid if an applicant must return to be re-tested.
